New Work Permit Categories in Kenya 2026: Class N, P, Q and R Explained

New Work Permit Categories in Kenya 2026: Class N, P, Q, and R Explained

Kenya has introduced four additional work permit categories to accommodate the changing needs of foreign professionals, remote workers, international organisations, and East African Community (EAC) citizens. The new categories were operationalised in April 2025 following amendments to the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Regulations, 2024.

The new work permits are Class N, Class P, Class Q and Class R. Each category serves a specific group of foreign nationals intending to live, work or undertake permitted activities in Kenya.

Understanding the eligibility requirements, application procedures and government fees is essential before submitting an application.

Class N: Digital Nomad Work Permit

The Class N Digital Nomad Permit is designed for foreign nationals who wish to live in Kenya while working remotely for businesses and clients located outside the country.

It is suitable for:

  • Employees working remotely for foreign-registered companies.
  • Shareholders or directors conducting business on behalf of foreign companies.
  • Self-employed professionals providing services to clients outside Kenya.

Key application requirements:

  • Valid passport.
  • Evidence of employment or business arrangements with a foreign company.
  • Bank statements or payslips for the preceding three months.
  • Proof of accommodation in Kenya.
  • Cover letters from the applicant and employer, where applicable.
  • Letter of no objection from the applicant’s home-country embassy.

Government fees:

  • Processing fee: USD 200.
  • Annual issuance fee: USD 1,000.

The permit is issued for one or two years and is renewable.

Class P: International Organisation Work Permit

Class P is intended for eligible employees of the United Nations, diplomatic missions, intergovernmental organisations and international non-governmental organisations accredited to neighbouring hardship countries, including staff based in those countries.

This category accommodates qualifying international personnel whose work involves regional and international organisational assignments.

Key application requirements:

  • Valid passport or relevant diplomatic travel document.
  • Proof of employment with the qualifying organisation.
  • Organisation registration certificate.
  • Official posting letter.
  • Evidence of remuneration for the preceding three months.
  • Employer’s supporting letter.

Government fees:

  • Processing fee: USD 200.
  • Annual issuance fee: USD 1,000.

Class Q: Professionals Working for Religious and Charitable Organisations

Class Q is intended for members of prescribed professions employed by religious or charitable organisations in Kenya.

Unlike permits intended for missionaries, this category targets qualified professionals who perform specialised duties rather than preaching or conducting religious worship and rituals.

Eligible applicants must demonstrate that their professional contribution will benefit Kenya.

Key application requirements:

  • Valid passport.
  • Academic and professional certificates.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Employment contract or appointment letter.
  • Supporting letters from the applicant and employing organisation.
  • Professional clearance where applicable.
  • Details of a suitable Kenyan understudy.
  • Organisation registration documents.

Government fees:

  • Processing fee: KES 20,000.
  • Annual issuance fee: KES 100,000.

Class R: East African Community Work Permit

Class R is designed for citizens of East African Community member states intending to reside, work, conduct business, trade or practise prescribed professions in Kenya.

It provides an immigration pathway for eligible EAC nationals seeking employment, business opportunities and professional engagements in Kenya.

Key application requirements:

  • Valid national passport.
  • Recent passport photographs.
  • Supporting letter from the employer or organisation, where applicable.
  • Business registration documents for applicants undertaking business activities.
  • Academic and professional certificates where relevant.
  • Additional supporting documents depending on the applicant’s intended activities.

Government fees:

  • Processing fee: FREE.
  • Annual issuance fee: FREE.

This makes Class R particularly attractive to eligible EAC nationals seeking to establish themselves professionally or commercially in Kenya.
